Idyllic Beaches of the Dolphin Coast

Category Holistic Living

Ballito is blessed with some of the most beautiful pristine, unspoiled beaches on the Dolphin coats of South Africa, with sub-tropical weather to keep us warm and fuzzy and enjoy the many water sports this area has to offer.

Westbrook situated between Umdloti and Ballito is this pretty beachside resort town with an amazing swimming beach and sands that stretch for miles. A drive along North Beach Road reveals mostly modern apartment buildings and townhouses that reach upward for the views.

Salmon Bay Beach is situated on the southern side of Ballito, just from the Zimbali beach, is great for surfing due to how exposed it is, creating a very consistent surf. You can walk your dogs on the beach as there is a large stretch of sand for dogs to run on. It is situated about 200m from the better-known Clark's Bay.

The beach is unspoilt and a fantastic place to spend the afternoon with your friends and family, and home to the deep sea Ski Boat, Jet Ski and Paddle Ski anglers, launch site. Be careful though the beach is notorious for its rip current.

Just south of Willard Beach lies the quieter Clark Bay with rocky pools on either side of this sandy beach. Lifeguards and shark nets are provided. It has a tidal pool where many living sea creatures can be observed. This beach is close to many know restaurants and on the popular Ballito promenade.

Willard Beach is the main beach of Ballito and is a prime surfing beach and hosts the annual Ballito Pro, a leg of one of the world's largest surfing competitions (presented by Billabong). This beach has been awarded one of the few Blue Flag beaches in the country in recognition of its beautiful setting, safe conditions, and excellent amenities. It offers plenty to see and to do. The beach has lifeguards on duty and is equipped with sharks' nets, making it a fantastic place to enjoy your choice of water sport.

Nestle between Ballito and Salt Rock you will find the area known as Shakas RockThompson's Bay. This area has properties ranging from holiday apartments to single dwellings and the elite Simbithi Eco estate. It is a popular holiday destination and well known for snorkelling, with a wide variety of fish, corals and other sea life. The tidal pool and 'hole in the wall' make this spot quite special. An activity for an active family is to walk from Thompson's Bay to Willard Beach, pack a picnic lunch and explore.

Salt Rock is a favourite holiday destination for many local South Africans and holiday apartments in this area remains an excellent investment. It is a bussing town with many new developments and has a selection of shopping places and many restaurants and eateries. As well as providing some fishing spots, there are reefs offshore. The popular swimming and surfing beach is protected by shark nets and has lifeguards on duty. Close to the main beach is a large tidal pool originally built for guests staying at the iconic Salt Rock hotel.

Sheffield Beach is popular with avid snorkelers and fishers alike as it's filled with beautiful rock pools teeming with an abundance of marine life and many safe secret coves. Further from the shore, there is a magnificent reef offering a variety of sea life, where scuba diving and spear-fishing is also extremely popular.

Christmas Bay beach is most Northern of Ballito beaches. It is always quiet and has beautiful rock pools. Walking to the North past the "point" you will find an endless open sandy stretch of beach that makes it the place for unrivalled peace, Estates like Zululami and Seaton have direct access to Christmas Bay.

The northern area of the Dolphin Coast is Blythedale beach, some 72 km from Durban. The unspoilt white sand beaches and properties with beautiful sea views will take your breath away. Blythedale Beach is protected by shark nets and used for swimming, surfing and fishing. The dog-friendly beach is one of the few places left on the Dolphin Coast where you can walk for kilometres and hardly ever see another person. The seas can be a hive of water activity for swimmers, fishing and surfers alike. Close by this beach is the ever-popular Palm Lakes Estate.

Tinley Manor Beach is north of Blythedale from the N2-road using the Tinley Manor turn-off and following the road down to the beach and car park. Here you will find a tidal pool and a sandy beach flanked by rocks on either side. This beach has no shark nets, and the lifeguards are seasonal. Anglers love standing on the rocks or the beach and trying their luck at landing a big one. The reefs are ideal for spear-fishing, snorkelling and SCUBA diving thanks to the large variety of colourful fish, anemones and crustaceans.

Zinkwazi Beach is a popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding and used for launching ski boats, jet skis and paddle skis that have a breathtakingly beautiful beach and lagoon. The main swimming beach is at the southern end of a 3.5km bay stretching from the Tugela River to a rocky point at Zinkwazi.
